Could it be mistletoe?
There is mistletoe in the top branches of the tree in the centre: the little dark ball.
The rest is probably ivy. I don’t think I’ve seen so much of it on a tree before – in summer most of it won’t get any light at all!
What a clever observation: “enthusiastic knitter in the family”. It does look like that!
